Julian leaned against the wall, wishing he were somewhere else, with someone else, doing something else.

…Anything else, really.

This whole endeavor was ridiculous.

They had arrived at the “Mesa Verde Super-Person Retirement Castle” ten minutes before, and so far, Julian was not at all impressed.

The facility was like a tomb for people who weren’t quite dead. The halls were lined with motivational posters of seemingly random images paired with obviously random words. They were hoping to inspire residents through such trite pleasantries as…well, “Inspire” unsurprisingly. Other posters advertised the merits of “Freedom” and “Responsibility.” The signs were all displayed in cheap frames which could be purchased at any surface world Mega-Mart for $9.99.

Julian found no “inspiration” in cheap frames and stale proverbs. He could think of nothing more ironic than putting an image of an obviously restrained animal on a poster proclaiming “Freedom” and then imprisoning the print forever behind a sheet of glass.

But, the terrestrials who ran this establishment had not asked him for his opinion. If they had, he would have told them to kill themselves, because they were obviously morons.

The goal of this particular trip was to finally rid themselves of Roach’s presence though, so at least it promised to be a rewarding day. Julian would like to have said that the years had just not been kind to the old man and that was the reason why he was so disagreeable, but the truth was that Roach had always been like that. The man had never been what someone might call…“civil.”

“No prison can keep me for long. When I get out of this, I’m coming for you, girl.” Roach’s gaze narrowed in rage. “Your father won’t be able to protect you.”

Harlot Ceigh rolled her eyes and patted him on his shoulder affectionately. “Oh, nonsense. You’ll have fun, Uncle Hector.” She pointed to the common room area. “See? Look at all your old friends who are here!”

Roach’s eyes scanned the room, then returned to Harlot. “I hated those fuckers when they weren’t old and incontinent. You think I like them any more now?”

A mustachioed elderly man with grey hair looked up from his puzzle featuring ducklings frolicking in a reed basket, and smiled pleasantly. “Well, if it isn’t my old enemy, The Roach!” He clapped his arthritic hands together in delight. “How the heck have you been, Hector!?! I haven’t seen you since that time you tried to detonate an A-bomb at the bi-centennial.”

“Fuck you, Gary.” Roach crossed his arms over his chest. “Just do your goddamn duck puzzle and don’t even talk to me.” He glowered at the man. “Fucking Cape.”

Harlot beamed. “Look, one of your old crowd is here and everything. I think you two have a lot of catching up to do, don’t you?”

Roach glanced up at her. “I fucked his wife. ‘Caught up’ with her every Thursday for four months.” He informed her nonchalantly. “Once, his daughter joined us.” He continued pouting. “That’s what I know.”

Harlot pretended that she didn’t even hear his vileness.
